Second Egyptian Forum for solid waste management in 2014

Cairo November 24 to 25

The Sawiris Foundation for Environmental Development participated in the second Egyptian Forum for solid waste management, of which the proportion actually collected in Egypt is only 60%, while only 20% of it is recycled. This casts a negative and dangerous shadow on the health and environment sectors.

The Egyptian government launched a national program for solid waste management with the support of European and German development partners in order to develop the solid waste management sector in Egypt in a sustainable manner. The government implements the program in conjunction with the German Development Cooperation, the German Development Bank and in cooperation with the European Commission. The program is designed to serve as a reformist program of national sectors through its technical assistance and supportive investment.

Support combines technical cooperation in the areas of policy formulation and development of legal frameworks and institutional and capacity building at the central and local levels on one hand and financial cooperation needed to invest in infrastructure for the management of solid waste and services at the municipal level on the other hand.
